MILK was a better movie.

MILK was a much more powerful film than Slumdog Millionaire. I know, it’s all subjective. If you’ve seen both movies - tell me you walked out more affected, more motivated, more enlightened after seeing Slumdog Millionaire than you were when you walked out of MILK ( Read more... )

still haven't seen Slumdog. neutron_x February 23 2009, 19:00:07 UTC
Did the Wrestler get shut the fuck out?
Sean Penn winning totally makes sense.

I’ve managed to catch every movie nominated for best picture except the Reader, and I’ve seen all of the best actor movies except The Visitor (Richard Jenkins). Mickey Rourke was fantastic in The Wrestler and a close second but Sean Penn easily deserved the award. Some people felt Mickey “needed” it more but Penn earned it - if just by a hair.

I don’t think The Wrestler was a great enough movie to be considered for best picture (which it wasn’t). I like Marisa Tomei and she was smokin’ hot as a stripper in The Wrestler but I wasn’t sure why they nominated her for best supporting actress. I didn’t feel her role had enough to it to garner a nomination. She really didn’t have that much screen time or big lines. So I definitely don’t think The Wrester was shut out. If MILK hadn’t come out last year then Mickey definitely would have won and deserved best actor.

The big shut-out was The Dark Night, although I think it’s weak ending ultimately was it’s demise. Benjamin Button deserved all the failure it got.

I actually liked the ending of Dark Knight. neutron_x February 23 2009, 20:11:05 UTC
I agree it got unfairly shut out though. As did Iron Man too, weirdly.

Of course Ledger was going to win... Penn had to win it.

The Dark Knight ending was a good comic book ending, but I didn't think it was a great "important movie" ending. I watched that film on IMAX and was just stunned by it's smartness and cinematography. The ending fit but also deflated that “amazing” feeling I was getting throughout the movie. I get the feeling that academy nominators felt the same way.

Iron Man was great. Not sure it was best picture great or acting great (Robert Downey Jr was awesome though). Still, just as good as Slumdog and Dark Knight was better than either of these films.

The most boring movie I have ever seen in my entire life was “Last Days” by Gus Van Sant. So so very boring. Put that next to MILK (also by Gus) and it’s like a roller coaster ride on meth. Maybe my expectations were low (and they were) but I didn’t think it was too boring. Could have used some robots though.
