514, Late Sunday Evening
After his conversation with John, Rodney was determined to do something so that he wouldn't have to spend the rest of the week as the sole caregiver for their twin droid babies. He'd spent the rest of the day learning about the technology of the droids so that he could reprogram them not to hate John. Finally, he felt ready to make an attempt.
His desk was clear of everything except his favorite laptop. And a bunch of wires. And Steve. Bob was sleeping peacefully on Rodney's bed.
He attached one of the cables to Steve and put in the command to his computer to access the droid's programming. After a moment, the droid's base code began to scroll across his screen. Rodney quickly focused on the code and started searching for any commands that might relate to John. As he was studying it, a low beep sounded. Rodney thought it might have to do with the connection to his computer. He forgot about the beep almost immediately as he found a line that looked promising. He spent a few moments figuring out how he could adjust it.
Then there was another beep.
Rodney looked up at Steve curiously. When nothing happened, he went back to the code. If he changed this command, and then another one a few lines down, it should make the droids... stop crying all together. That would be too obvious a sign of tampering to work. He sighed and looked for something else.
Beep.
Okay, now he was getting worried. He hadn't even done anything but access the code yet.
Beep.
Maybe he needed to work quicker. He began inputting a new code.
Beep. Beep.
Rodney typed faster.
BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.
“Okay, that is seriously not good!”
BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.
“All right! You win! I'm changing it back!”
BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP!
Rodney reset the base code to its original state as quickly as he could.
BEEEEEEEEEEEEP!
The beeping was now a solid tone. As soon as he was sure everything was back to the way he found it, Rodney closed the program and pulled out the connection.
Silence.
“Oh,” Rodney said breathlessly. “That was close.”
