The Three Dimes

May 23, 2005 00:13

While I was in Seattle last weekend I was waiting for the monorail in the afternoon and came across a single dime balanced carefully on a railing. This past Saturday morning I found a dime smack dab in the middle of the hallway of a residence Hall in Pullman, WA. Both times I pocketed the coins without giving the occurences any thought. A little while ago I was out running in the pitch dark and passed a small church as I do sometimes on my late night runs. I saw a tiny gleam of silver in the gravel parking lot being reflected by moonlight. It was only a pin point of silver, but I ran over to look anyway. It was a dime. I have the dime sitting on my desk at this very moment. When I picked up this third dime from the church parking lot I instantly remembered the two other ten cent pieces that I hadn't paid any attention too. Even though I'd found the two other dimes quite easily and obviously in the brightness of day, it was this dime found in the pitch black of night that provoked the most thought and that I paid the most attention too. The dime is ordinary and like all other dimes, but because it was one small sparkling ray of silver surrounded by total darkness I was able to see it more clearly than any of the others. Kneeling in the church parking lot, by moonlight I read the inscription at the bottom of the coin: "In God we trust." Sometimes it is necessary to go through darkness to see and appreciate the light more clearly, and sometimes the smallest things can teach and remind me/us of the biggest lessons.

Perhaps there's more I should learn and take away from this odd series of events. Perhaps it's purely a coincidence that the last three coins I've found have all been dimes, and perhaps I'm reading too much into this. Who's to say, but I know finding the three dimes has reminded me of an important lesson and perhaps taught me something I hadn't quite realized before. For that I'm thankful. ...It's just too bad I couldn't have been reminded of this lesson through quarters or dollar bills. ;)
