Building work

We're into week three of our building project. In week 0 we moved out of the first floor, shifting all the beds into the attic. To our pleasant surprise Lisa was completely unphased by this. (Perhaps because she gets to sleep in my shocking pink study?)

Week 1 was all about adding insulation to the walls on the first floor. This has knocked 7cm off the length and width of the rooms, but it should have made things much much warmer and more energy efficient. It'll also make hanging things on the walls easier now we won't be drilling into brick every time. Week 1 took four days, the plasterer was due to start on the Friday, but was sick.

Week 2 was plastering the new walls, this took three days, and then work stopped while we waited for the new window-frames and windows to be delivered.

Week 3 is this week, and with the windowframes arrived the builders have been busily ripping out all the first floor windows (took about three hours this morning) and putting in new ones. Apparently they'll be finished on Thursday, maybe a little bit of work on Friday.

Then at the weekend I'll be painting our shiny new walls, and on Monday the plumber will come by to reattach the radiators. So by the middle of next week we can return all the furniture to the right places and get back to living in our new, warmer house. Next year we'll have the same kind of work done to the ground floor.

So far the builders have been great. Which just isn't what you're led to expect in these circumstances.
