Summon Your Dragons

Since I took the whole weekend off, including Friday, I actually got some time to look at my writing. At Kimi's urging (bless her) I uploaded Summon Your Dragons up to Smashwords:
Summon Your Dragons and made it a free download.

I won't pretend it is up to Kimi's standards, but if you like a thoughtful fantasy with the odd dragon and a high body count it might appeal. I wasn't able to format the map and the appendices (yes, I know, Tolkien did those too, and the imitation there is deliberate). But I'll put them up on our website sometime soon. Actually it is not a lot like Tolkien except for the effort I put in to make the cultures 'right'. There are no elves, dwarfs etc, just humans living in an iron age society that never really existed. There are even almost no dragons and only a little magic. What there is is important, but the story is more about the people.

And one thing it is NOT is a story about a magic talisman and a dark lord who has an army that vastly outnumbers the good guys. When I was writing this (a while ago) every fantasy book I picked up was pretty much this plot derived from... guess who?

Okay, I've probably unsold it enough now.....

There is a sequel that happens eight years later (so the body count wasn't complete). That has even fewer dragons and about the same amount of magic. Again, no dark lord, no vast army. In fact in this one almost no one knows what the protagonist actually did, and if they had they would not think it important. Gosh I'm good at this underselling thing! I haven't uploaded that yet, still some minor tidy ups to do.

But I'm quite pleased that there have been downloads from Smashwords already. It probably helps a lot that it is free. And downloads are not reads, and even reads are not likes.
