Book to film adaptations annoy me too much.
I think the only decent one was in fact the LOTR films, but even that wasn't without its flaws. I watched the first three episodes of A Game of Thrones finally, since I was curious to see how it stacked up to the book. It's been awhile since I've read it, it's such a complex book that I ended up just reading by character. Each chapter has the name of the character it focuses on, so the first is Eddard, another is John, Daenerys and so on. Daenerys is my favourite, I'm not sure why but I enjoy it. So I was really looking forward to seeing how that would look on the screen. Let me just say I am NOT HAPPY about how they did it.
First of all, the Dothraki riders oil their hair, and Drogo is said to wear bells in his braids and beard. I didn't see anyone with oiled hair, nor did I see any braids. Drogo's hair is simply pulled back. At their wedding, many of the gifts are explaine to Daenerys by either the fat guy who was hosting them or the knight (I can't remember who). Most importantly, Daenerys is introduced to Drogo's bloodriders who'll also protect her. She is given 3 weapons at her wedding as gifts, but as she's a woman she's not permitted to wield them. So Drogo's three Bloodriders tell her that it will be their honour to use them in her stead. The whip is one of the gifts. Also, when Daenerys is given her silver horse there is a reason that Drogo chose that colour horse - because of Daenerys' pale hair and skin. The knight tells her that she must ride the horse (despite having never ridden in her life, another point they didn't mention in the episode) or Drogo will be insulted and angry. She rides it around the camp and ends up enjoying herself, and everyone at the wedding sort of cheers her. She has the knight tell Drogo that he has given her the wind, since the Dothraki have no word for thank you. Also at her wedding you are introduced to her three handmaids, and the one non-Dothraki girl is supposed to be BLONDE. Not a brunette. They were his brother's gift. Also that night I'm pretty sure the sex didn't go down like that. Her progress from shy girl to more confident is also better shown. When se stops the riders to walk in the grass, she is caught up in enjoying being in the grass when her brother rides up on her. And it is HER, not the rider, who makes him walk back to the men. She commands the rider to take his horse, he doesn't do it of his own will. He wouldn't dare without a command from his queen or king. Eventually he is given his horse back. It is also explained WHY they are riding to their destination, because there is a reason. Lastly her pregnancy is done completely different in the book. And Drogo gradually starts speaking more Common while she starts learning more Dothraki.
So yeah. Not pleased. As far as I know everything else is doing okay, but I'm going to reread them to be sure. I'm curious why the runt pup John took has disappeared, when all the other dire wolves have made appearances. Guess we'll see. But I'm not as impressed as I hoped I would be.
