The Dalziel and Pascoe series: where to start

Mar 12, 2017 08:14

I am a great fan of Reginald Hill’s Dalziel and Pascoe mystery series. It is perhaps the only series I have read as an adult on a more or less completely random basis, grabbing things from the library as they became available, filling in with purchases what the library did not have. That was the first time. I went back and reread them recently for ( Read more... )

And just a note: your Georgette Heyer ranking is part of what inspired me to do this, because it was so useful to me when another friend gave me a giant stack of Heyers. I put them in order of how much you liked them, I discovered that I agreed substantially with your rankings--so when I got past a certain point, I knew not to continue, and yet on the other hand I had had the best ones first and got a clear positive experience thereby.

Why thank you for this! The one random one I tried from the library was #2 (on the theory that chronology is good, and I think #1 wasn't on the shelf), and it was not an enticing introduction.

I've wanted to try again and this guide is extremely helpful!

When I read them, there were only three available on Kindle. It was several years ago and I never pursued more of them. I will reread the ones I have and start watching for them at the library. I recall being very pleased with them.

Since you appreciate humor in your mysteries, if you haven't read any of the Burglar series by Lawrence Block, I recommend them. Bernie Rhodenbarr is a delightful thief.
