God help me, this morning I am in the same state as Sarah Palin. No, not delirium, silly, it's Virginia! Richmond, Virginia, to be precise. Where the south isn't quite the south just yet, but enough so to be intriguing.
I feel I may have Country Roads stuck in my head all day. Even though this isn't West Virginia.
They say that Virginia has become a swing state in the election this year. You wouldn't know it from the TV. I have seen a bajillion (yes, a precise figure that) of McCain's Obama attack ads since we got here last night, but not one Obama ad. Does Richmond count as North Virginia? (Unreal Virginia, if you will?) It's kind of in the middle, but I understand the town to be a fairly liberal place despite it's history. If Obama is really winning by 7 points here (according to a poll I saw on TV earlier), then it's all the more impressive considering his lack of TV advertising (from my perfectly-reliable experience of maybe two hours of background television).
We were right next to Jeremy Paxman for the entirety of our Dulles airport security experience - definitely over an hour. Well, he was quite far back from us in the line, but since it snaked around several times, we kept walking past him. He did not look as if he was in a happy-go-lucky mood. I would not describe his expression as boisterous. I also thought we had Philip Pullman directly behind us but a swift google search has proved me wrong on that score.
Paxo was reading a hardback. It took several snakes before Liz and I finally discerned who it was by. A man named Sebastian Barry. I memorised the name easily, since my Dad is called Barry and the lead character from the Neverending Story was called Bastian. A quick google shows that Seb Barry (Bazza to his friends) is an Irish novelist, poet and playwright, which is a little disappointing as I was hoping Paxo would be reading about serious parliamentary political matters like wigs and Betty Boothroyd.
Anyway, we have a day to explore Richmond, so I better get to it.
