EMI and dying record stores

Jul 13, 2009 13:20

Apparently EMI Records contacted a bunch of independently-owned record stores and told them they won't be selling to them anymore.

Thus is one more nail in the coffin of record stores. I'm afraid they will die sometime in my lifetime, and that will be a tough one to take.

It's not just the record stores, but there is a fundamental shift toward favoritism of corporate chains. Not even just by consumers, but even by the suppliers of supplies. Corporations can get larger amounts of better ingredients/products for cheaper prices because they order them in bulk on a regular basis; whereas the local businesses may to resort to cheaper products just to keep their prices lower for the people who want to support local businesses. There's a reason why Wal-Mart does so much better than a store that specializes in Fair Trade certified clothing and food.

It just makes me upset to see local culture being thrown out the window in the name of corporate takeover, marketed as capitalism.
