Caught part of a band tonight. They were doing basically all mid-90s to early 2000s rock covers. The band were guys a little older than me who seemed more bored than anything, fronted by a fairly talented female singer who seemed somewhat into it, but was more excited about getting free drinks.
The thing wasn't my cup of tea, but the crowd loved it.
It got me thinking this:
It made me kinda sad at first seeing these people love all this music that they knew and loved, that took them back to "the good ol days." I go into a lot of bars now and see people that make me think of that "Glory Days" song by Bruce Springsteen. But then what I started thinking was: is there really a difference between the people in the bar rocking out to Matchbox 20 and Sugar Ray covers and me, whose favorite music is anywhere between 30 and 70 years old?
Maybe there's a little difference, but not much. Our passion both lies in our love of the song, the way a certain tune makes us feel, and remembering the first time we fell in love with it. Maybe the real difference is that a lot of mine has stood a test of time through generations, but we still love the songs for the same reasons for the most part.
Of course I think my taste is more interesting than theirs, but I suppose I understand what they like about them. Besides, there's nothing quite like hearing the songs you love sung live to you by people who also love the song, and with people who love the song.
Unfortunately, it all just makes me want to be on stage again.
