I am interested in purchasing an electric car.
Not a hybrid.
So, I have been researching electric cars casually for about the past year. I consider myself a pragmatist, so I am interested in what is available now, not the vapor claims for some future that may or may not become real.
I only work about 6 miles from my home, and am able to get there by surface streets without needing to get on a freeway.
That makes me think a Neighborhood Electric Vehicle (NEV) could fit my needs.
The ones I have read about, and are actually purchasable have been:
1. Global Electric Motorcars' e4 -
http://gemcar.comIt is a 4-seater with about 30miles of range (I will assume a real world range of 20miles, but will still work for my commute). It uses pretty standard lead-acid batteries. Not the most energy dense, but easily available and non-exotic. It is my 1st choice as it seems inexpensive (about $10,000), and is something I can possibly add solar panels to the roof, and a battery charger to extend it range, and let it charge-up while sitting in the outdoor parking lot at work. Oh, and they are sold by some Dodge dealerships.
2. Zap - haven't done much research yet.
3. Zenn - haven't done much research yet.
4. Any others to mention, suggest, or recommend?
...I am always interested if people have suggestions, real world experiences, testimonials, and recommendations on electric cars for the Southern California region.
