Alright, here is a little story...
When I was a young girl, my father would tell me, and my three years younger brother, that we should behave, because if we didn't, the WEREPIGS would come and take us away...
Now, the WEREPIGS were invisible, and my father was the only one in the family who could sense them coming. He let us in on a secret, the failsafe way of getting rid of a WEREPIG, was to lie on your back and snort like a pig...
The WEREPIGS could show up anywhere, at home, while we were camping, even the grocery store. Any time my father got that look in his eye, my brother and I were flat on our backs and snorting (and laughing a little hysterically)
He did not see them all the time, and I believe it was the subtlety with which he used this story led us to believe and half/believe it for a space of at least 2 years...
Another example is from a woman I met at work who told me that when she was a young girl up in Duluth, she and her sisters didn't watch tv (think 1960's when playing outside still happened) As many of you know, the fog up in Duluth can be extreme. Well this woman's mother would give her and her sisters each a salt shaker and send them outside to look for FOGBIRDS. The FOGBIRDS make amazing pets and will grant you a wish, but the only way to keep them from flying away was to sneek up on them and put salt on their tail. So whenever it was very foggy out the girls went with their salt shakers out into it for hours at a time in search of this perfect pet.
Alright, now it is your turn, I am creating a collection of these kinds of contemporary "folk stories" If you have one, or know of one, please send it to me (if you want it to be anonymous that is fine, but if you are willing, I would love to have as much detail as possible!)
Thank you so much for your help and keep the stories coming - please ask your friends and families!!!
