(No, Mycroft is not my new favorite. I am not very taken with the idea of him being an awesome big brother and loving Sherlock to pieces, even when Sherlock is aggravating as all hell. Nope.)
In my ongoing Adventure in Reading Canon, I am still on A Study in Scarlet, because I am a slow reader. However, there was a part today where Mormons showed up. In droves of thousands. In a desert. And I had to ask: Why exactly are there Mormons in this story?
Apparently they are like the Mafia of the Old West. They generally intimidate and bully people in keeping the faith. If someone dares Defy the Faith, these folks are taken away silently and craftily.
I . . . I really shouldn't like this detail of plot quite so much. I am also trying to decide how much of a bizarre non-sequitur this constitutes and exactly what is going on with Holmes and Watson that requires a smokescreen wide enough to blot out the Atlantic seaboard of the US. Surely Watson doesn't need to go into so much detail and backhistory here? Does he?

When she had vanished from his sight, he realized that a crisis had come in his life, and that neither silver speculations nor any other questions could ever be of such importance to him as this new and all-absorbing one. The love which had sprung up in his heart was not the sudden, changeable fancy of a boy, but rather the wild, fierce passion of a man of strong will and imperious temper.
I oscillate between being wildly humored by how overly dramatic this is and being stricken by how lovely the idea is, in and of itself, even if the prose is so very purple.
