fandom_muses: Topic 16 - Goodbye

Apr 11, 2006 12:41

The moment he saw the shriveled, dried out corpse and found the crucifix, time seemed to bend in on itself. He didn’t have enough schooling, solitary or otherwise, to make any kind of great scientific analogies in his own mind, but he knew that the past and present had connected to bring him to the future.

On an airstrip and in a broken Beechcraft, he stood in helpless horror as he took in his brother’s lifeless body. In both places, he was restrained from moving forward by the powerful currents of a propeller, by the thick smell and feel and *essence* of death cooling his skin even in the island heat.

On the airstrip and in the fallen plane, his heart beat so fast it had no rhythm, only one long pulse of life that kept him in motion, kept air in his lungs and blood moving in his veins.

On the airstrip, he held Yemi in his mind. In the plane, he held Yemi in his arms.

Both halves, past and present, joined in a single instant in helpless rage, shock, and unbearable sorrow. In this loop where history and destiny were one, he faced himself...young, angry, and filled with anger as a twisted young killer faced a man stripped of pride and arrogance to reveal the purity of a soul that had only just begun to live.

To the past, he gave the secrets of the future. To the future, he gave the reminder that even in darkness, there was salvation...his little brother’s final gift to him.

And as the plane departed into the open sky, engine roaring and in the quiet crackle of funereal flames, he swore his vows of ordination in his brother’s blood as he said goodbye to his family.

For the first...and the last time.
