I remember reading these as a kid and being skeeved out by Arch and the gang's cold sloe eyes. I suppose they wanted them to look more compassionate and filled with the spirit of the Lord, but to me they just looked unpleasantly dilated.
I like that Reggie's vanity and subsequent damnation is represented by his closed eyes.
