Stuff You Don't Know About Me

Nov 10, 2008 10:04

I attend mass at an Episcopalian church every Sunday, and at least twice a month I perform one of the readings.

That said, I'm a pretty bad Christian. I'm regularly wrathful, prideful, lustful, and envious. I'm trying to do better. It's worth mentioning that I tend to view Jesus more as a human philosopher than a divine cop.

At the same time, the other half of me is a monster. Mike passed along an interesting article from the Atlantic that explored the possibility that we don't have single personalities, we have multiple ones. Unlike dissociative identity disorder sufferers, however, we're able to regulate these personalities. Hence, monster Dan stays inside, for the most part. What stuck with me about the article was the suggestion that writers of fiction aren't creating personalities, they're channeling them onto the page. Truly, I experience a sensation of freedom when I'm writing a wicked character's dialog or describing his actions. No, that's not a terribly profound observation, but from my perspective it feels gargantuan.
