What is the proper definition of a "graphic novel"? Does it need to be a self-contained, single-story comic published as a book (The Death of Captain Marvel), or does a series compiled into book form (say the Cerebus "phonebooks") also qualify?
Cerebus phonebooks are all part of a larger story that could never be compiled into a single book. Hence, are Church and State I and Church and State II considered separate novels, or are they collectively a larger graphic novel necessarily separated by physical space (like Proust's In Search of Lost Time?). Collection of the work of a creator like Dan Clowes also beggar the definition. Is Pussey! a graphic novel, while Lout Rampage (an anthology) isn't?
Of course, it could also come down to the basic meaninglessness of most marketing terms.
