I think Tina Fey is the first female comedian who does routines about being a woman that make me laugh rather than say, "Huh?" or "Oh, a menses joke. How absolutely original." It might well be because I've lived with a woman long enough (11 years) to pick up on all the gags about, say, trying to act sexy in grungy terry-cloth pajamas, pockets stuffed with Kleenex. I think I enjoy the way she plays up her neuroses without falling into the, "Oh, I'm just a mess! See how adorably neurotic I am? I wish I could find a man!" routine. On 30 Rock she seems a little more like a real professional woman than, say, Sarah Jessica Parker on Sex in the City or those annoying Barbies on Friends. As I've said, I think Sarah Chalke (Scrubs) is funny as hell, of course, but she and the rest of the show's characters are intentionally cartoonish. What makes her funny is that she's less helpless and more than a touch scary in her neuroses.
