I feel like I've been skimping on content here. Sorry. I'm growing more invested in my latest project, the Black Patti article. Like many a Dan Kelly piece, it starts out small. Then the research machine kicks in, and soon I'm perusing everything from documents at the Chicago Historical Society to ancient scrolls recovered from the sunken city of
R'lyeh.* I'm also interviewing amusing septuagenarian dudes who look like they might have been residents of R'lyeh themselves.
Here's a recent post to Gapers Block to keep you sated. John is a good guy. You should see him perform.
John Hasbrouck is a local guitarist who just can't stop joining bands. There's his "jugless" jug band
Hardscrabble, local band
Cracklin Moth, his mandolin accompaniment to songwriter
James Curley, the countrified stylings of the
Lawrence Peters Outfit, and others. Hurry up and
see the fleet-fingered Hasbrouck before he drops dead of
exhaustion.
* God bless Wikipedia. Here's the nearest
satellite image of the coordinates H.P. Lovecraft himself gave for R'lyeh! Hey, I think I can see Cthulhu's house from here!
