How Magic Complicates Life

Sep 24, 2009 18:23

In some ways, the children all had five sets of parents.  Makoto taught the girls how to cook; Minako gladly-most of the time-took care of clothes shopping, Usagi spoiled them, Rei told stories and handled spiritual matters, and Ami helped with studies.  The system worked well, though the other girls had been a bit confused when Ami started teaching the girls before they were in school.

There were times, however, when Ami wished she had a different talent to bring to the group.  Times that had nothing to do with feeling impotent when cornered alone by an enemy or being protected to form a strategy while the others fought.

“Why don’t you go play with Emily, Usagi-chan?  I think it’s time for a break.”

“Thanks, Aunt Ami!”  The seven year old future princess beamed as she ran from the table into the back yard, to have some quality time with a very energetic puppy.

Ami rubbed the bridge of her nose, trying to assuage an oncoming headache as soon as the girl was out of sight.

She did not look up as she heard a familiar chuckle.  “That bad?”

Ami sighed and shook her head.  “No… I just… I don’t see what’s so difficult about it.”

Zoe grinned as she placed a plate of cookies on the table, “Science doesn’t come easy to everyone, love.”

“I know… and she’s trying hard.  She’s a much better student than her mother was, I just don’t quite get what’s tripping her up here.  She’s a smart kid.”

Zoe sat opposite her wife and glanced at the problems they had been working.  She studied the page for a moment before chuckling.  “I think I see what the problem is?”

Ami frowned slightly, looking at her, “What?”

“It’s the questions about what happens to water when it gets heated that’s the problem, right?”

Ami nodded, “Yeah… I mean, it seems simple enough.”

Zoe grinned, “Unless you have an aunt who controls water and one who controls fire.  Love, I’ve seen you slow down the molecules of water enough to keep it in solid form on hot days, or even in fights in which Rei’s also using fire.  It is simple, unless your seven year old mind knows that’s not how it works cause she’s seen it, ‘so there’.”

Ami groaned, though Zoe heard the repressed laugh.  “The problem is magic?”  Zoe nodded.  “You know, technically, I just manipulate science…”

“Not at a second grade level, you don’t, Ami-chan.”  Zoe kissed her forehead, “Should I call her back in, or do you want a few minutes to try to figure out how to explain it?”

“Call her back in, and then call Usagi and tell her she owes me a chocolate ice cream.”

Zoe laughed as she headed to the back door, “Will do.”
