Hey, don't let me stop you. I'd still take that commute. I'd just be REALLY cautious coming through the blind corners.
The deer I hit was at a full run, and came from the left and slightly behind me across a field.

A deer on the road or a cage on the highway.
There will be risks any time on the bike one eay or the other.
Stick to the mountains.

You may think differently, but I believe my chances are better on the freeway with light traffic. I'll take the predictability of that over the randomness of wildlife when my well-being is at stake.

I actually have done LA during rush hour, numerous times. Splitting lanes on a V-strom was a bitch.
If I had to face that on a regular basis, I'd probably opt for backroads just like you would.
Traffic is barely an issue on my commute.
