I did one just like this a few years ago, but it's fun enough for a second go.

Total songs - 28,412

Sort By Song
First Song: "?" - カジヒデキ
(That's the name - as on the album - not something some idiot typed on Napster! It's the first listing that isn't the result of a corrupt, missing, or garbled ID3 tag.)
Last Song: "黒い扉" - くるり

Sort By Time
Shortest Song: "xiexie.mp3" (0:01)
Longest Song: "The 2004 Democratic National Convention, Day Four" (1:41:55)
Of course, these are not songs, but tracks. The first few pages of the listings are primarily audio samples, and the last (longest) are all audio books or podcasts. It would be interesting to have people note the shortest and longest actual songs, but then there might be a semantic difficulty... which could be fun unto itself! What constitutes a "song"? The shortest possibilities I'd consider are by the 20 to 40 second tracks by the 14-Year-Old Girls; the longest non-classical song probably is by Yes, Pink Floyd, or the like.

Sort By Artist
First Artist: 'Til Tuesday
Last Artist: 菅野よう子

Sort By Album
First Album: "¡Viva El Amor!" - The Pretenders
Last Album: "他フリクリ オリジナルサウンドトラック1" - The Pillows
There are hundreds after that with no album information because of missing ID3 data, or 'Net-only tracks that simply weren't on an album, etc.

Sort By Most Played
This is where things really get interesting and are not a simple artifact of various ordering schemae. I proposed this portion of this meme in an article I wrote for the Denver Mac User Group. (That was back when iTunes was called SoundJam!)
What Song: "Six Feet Under Title Theme (Rae & Christian Remix)
How Many Plays: 335
(Although I do like this track, it's an anomaly because I had it on repeat, then muted it to drive up to my other house; then it played for two days while I was gone. AFAICT, the actually most-played is "(Don't Fear) The Reaper [original version]", at 86 times.)

"Do The Shuffle!
Shuffle your library and list the first twenty songs. No padding your playlist you hipster, you. Be honest!"

In iTunes, one must perform a sort by some criterion, so I don't know how to do this without selecting "Shuffle", hitting "Play", and then waiting to see what comes up... plus it might be embarrassing! ;-)

Also, iTunes is pseudo-random. Even at the default setting (and one can adjust the "randomness" in Smart Playlists), iTunes has a lower chance of playing tracks with a zero play count. But maybe later tonight when I have more time!

I had to do some selective editing, as well, but all within the spirit of the meme. There were a bunch of NSF Nintendo song files that were incorrectly listed as being extremely long for some reason, and I didn't count those. I also didn't count any of the surprisingly plentiful very short sound clips that don't even have proper names. If I don't count the Vietnamese lesson or its ilk for longest, I get the "cover" of Hotel California by Zeek Sheck, which is so far into the avant garde that it might not count as music, either. I only deleted one song from the shuffle, though, and that was a dead file with a meaningless name, so I figure that's okay.

Since you mention 14 Year-old Girls, you do know that Polysics is coming back this Sunday, right?

Polysics?? deathwardegg March 8 2006, 17:27:49 UTC
Whaaah?? Polysics ? By "back", you mean in Santa Fe? I was just now planning my trip to the 20th annual South X Southwest Music Festival next week to see a friend play, and saw that Polysics, She Wants Revenge, Echo & the Bunnymen, the Beastie Boys, Morrissey, Neil Young, and well over a thousand acts I've never heard of, are playing too.
I want to see Polysics here too!!

Yeah, Polysics loves Santa Fe, we treat them right. They are coming to the Warehouse 21 this Sunday the 12th. $10, 7pm. Expect a crowd, if the last two times have been any indication.
