I'm feely really tired and a bit sick, so I took my temperature. I used one of those little thermometers that's just a plastic strip that slaps against my forehead. It told me I had a temperature of 104o. I think I would feel a bit worse then I do if I had a temp that high, so I got another normal, mouth-based, God-fearing thermometer. New temperature reading: 97o. Stupid slappy thermometers. Of course, that seems a bit low. Oh well.
While feeling sick, I have been seeking out cool old freeware games. One noteworthy find is
Noctis which is seriously nerdy. It adds just a dash of anthropomorphic cats to hard scifi space exploration.
Beyond that I've realized that I really like the idea of a roguelike. I think there is something extremely appealing about a game that is tweakable, adaptable, and totally unapologetic about stealing worthy ideas from other games. The problem is, I don't really like Rogue. Is there a game out there that has that kind of flexability, but also has a bit more sophistication? I know that's a tall order. Hell, I'd settle for a roguelike with a Sci-Fi setting.
Noctis, to me, underscores how poorly the randomly generated universe mechanic has been developed. Are there any examples, other then Noctis, of it working in a non hack and slash game? I'm not saying there aren't, I just don't know about them.
