I'm home at 0130 which is pretty awesome. In fact, damn awesome. I'm going to give myself ten points. Yay! :D
Went out for dinner with Kim, Richard The First and Sarah tonight at one of the top rated mexican restaurants in the city which was pretty awesome. Surprisingly cheap too! :)
I think they were a little bit upset about my vehement refusal to leave a tip at the and also to overpay for the tuk-tuk back home. There's few of us in the boat however I have the firm belief that if a tipping culture develops here they'll be all the worse for it.
When we all jumped out of the tuktuk on the main street some shouting came from an apartment across the road and I ended up having some beers with Brett & Andrew. Brett only had 6 beers tho so we ended up at the local with a tower of beer.
Andrew said things did feel a little bit hostile when we walked in because everyone was staring at us. I picked up on the everyone staring but didn't think it was all too hostile, but clearly it was putting him on edge a little bit. But it was OK, because I had a plan.
When you buy a tower of beer as we did, you get a free jug of beer. When it arrived just in the nick of time I managed stop Brett pouring it out and grabbed the jug - Approaching the table that were staring the most and using my *very* limited khmai I gave them our jug. They were way more happy and every stare henceforth was accompanied by a nice smile!
Ten minutes later they try and get our attention and we do a cross table cheers.
Thirty minutes later one of them brings over a small plate with some dried peas from a packet they'd all bought and gives it us. What champions!
We finish up the tower and Andrew & I go to leave. Brett who still has a beer elects to stay to finish his. I wonder if he has intentions of table jumping and hanging out with the other table. I do hope not, and hope he goes home.
It's a dangerous place, Phnom Penh. You step out onto the road and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might get swept off to.
