I've now read enough Michael Crichton to know that I won't be reading any more.  Once I find out how Timeline ends, I'm done with him.  It's not that he's outright awful.  Guy knows how to pace a story, I'll give him that.  Thing is, if you pace a story well and then give the reader no emotional investment in the characters or what happens to them

Crichton was a kick ass writer-when I was 12 and read Jurassic Park three times. He stopped being kick ass when I was 13 and read Sphere. That's not being an elitist, its being, um, well maybe it is being elitist but I enjoy it.

I actually read Digital Fortress for a popular fiction class I took one summer (The other gems on the syllabus were The Girl With the Pearl Earing and The Secret Life of Bees). The teacher never once acted like we should be embarassed for seriously reading Dan Brown in a 300 level college course and I hate her to this day for it.

I actually disliked most of her songs on Soviet Kitsch when I first heard them but now that I've gone back to them I appreciate them more. I totally think her voice has to grow on you, except for that one song where she just does raspberries into the microphone. That I could do without :).
