The Phelpsites picketed KU's graduation ceremonies this year. I can't say as I'm surprised; they picketed Ralph Nader's speech at the Lied Center in 2001 for the same reason: There's a crowd. Also Lawrence is an epicenter of homosexual depravity.

After commencement the hatemongers were kind of at loose ends, so they walked the streets, presumably to wherever their rides were going to be, signs still pointed skyward. I didn't bother to read any of them this time. Same old. Brett and I drove by a cluster of them at a stoplight. For the duration of our eye contact with them he held the horn down and his middle finger up. I may never forget the serenity in the face of the young woman holding the sign and smiling. Neither smug nor discernibly righteous, but genuinely pleased to see this display. Her smile said, You are going to hell, and that makes me happy.
