Could it be time for an update?

Well well well. Guess I've come strolling back into the Livejournal limelight at last. After a long time, it's time for some observations and maybe a little poetry, for anyone who still bothers to read this thing ( Read more... )

The working middle class is dead...
The working middle class is far from dead. In America, unemployment is at 4-5% which is where is should be for general moving from job to job. Yes, some jobs are being moved to other countries, but for every one lost there is another in its place. Also, you may not know it but those jobs go to people just as deserving in other countries. They aren't simply lost. At least, not until we get better at making robots.

Fossil fuels are fading...
Fossil fuels have been fading since the day man discovered he could use them for warmth. Gas prices are not going up because we are almost out of oil. Gas prices are going up because America is just now starting to equalize their costs with the rest of the world. Why? In a word: China. China's oil use has been increasing rapidly as their economy has been booming. As such, they are competing with us in what is essentially the eBay of oil. Yes, these fuels will eventually run dry, but that is not expected for quite some time. Bush wants to tap the oil reserves in Alaska because he will get the credit when gas prices drop. We don't have to compete for gas produced in America. Also, the Alaskans that live there want the oil to be tapped so that they can make a better living. The people complaining are people, like yourself, who have never been there and never intend to go there. I'm not sure whether I would want it to be drilled or not. I don't think that the fact that I like to travel is reason enough not to drill if the people there will have better lives because of it. What I am sure of is that we should be working on technology to reverse global warming. The government was wise not to enter into the Kyoto protocol because it was a terrible system that would have hurt the economy far more than it would have benefitted the environment. Still, something needs to be done, just something else.

Do people have pride in the way they dress anymore?
At times, I believe they do... but only when it's necessary. Other than myself, I think it is a rare occurrence that anyone in the school cares what they wear. Though, if taking pride in the way you dress is so important, why the negative attitude towards Abercrombie and fashion in general? Personally, I think wearing jeans that fit and a t-shirt everyday is pretty dressed down compared to what a college student should wear. I can look back at what I wore freshman year and say, "what what I thinking?" For me, it was because I was depressed and I didn't care what I wore. Since going to Asia, all of that has changed. My outlook on life is much better, as is my fashion sense. If people want to wear Abercrombie, let them. Different types of people should wear different clothes. Some people wear designer labels, some wear only second hand clothes, some people prefer high style, some people will dress like bums, some girls will dress sluttily, and others will dress conservatively. That makes it easy to tell who is a leader and who is a follower, who care about how they look and who could care less, who is a slut and who has self confidence. It's quite a useful system we have if you learn its ins and outs.

Anyway, I thought the poem was good, though I would eliminate the words "Brief conclusion". That's just me though. Also, if you want to chill sometime, have a cup of tea of something, let me know. You seem really caught up with life and all though, so good luck to you. Peace.

The American working class is dying. Just because we have low unemployment does not mean the jobs are in the working class sector. Factory work, call centers (tech support, complaints dept, etc), respected lower class jobs are all leaving he US. It is now necessary for people to go into debt gaining a college degree to have job prospects other than waiting tables (a respected job, admittedly, but not for everyone). I am personally aspiring to be a lawyer, but I believe we need to maintain blue-collar jobs outside the service industry to maintain some degree of economic independence from the rest of the world. Why we should remain self-sufficient is another debate all together.

While fossil fuels won't disappear anytime soon, it would be nice to fine a less polluting way to get around in the US. And I still have not seen conclusive evidence that global warming the world spanning diaster that some people claim. How do we know the earth isn't just going through a natural warming cycle? And where is the evidence that the earth is warming; in Antartica, the ice is actually thickening in the core of the continent.

I agree that everyone should dress how they please normally, but as student we have a responsibility to not be a distraction to our fellow classmates. This means turning off cell phones, keeping your underwear covered (especially if its a bright color like neon green or orange) because the difference in color it will reflexively draw the eye, and not showing so much cleavage (because the irregular shape of the dip between the breast will draw the eye). Its more a matter of common courtesy than anything; I don't wear my big johnson shirt because it would distract people, you should not dress like the females on the big johnson shirt.

Just my thoughts on the matters.
Respectively yours,
Rusty

Yes, it's dying, but it's been dying for at least 2 decades now. It's nothing new, and it will continue. It's just a natural part of globalization and, like it or not, the world is going to equalize itself economically. We don't need to remain self sufficient because the world is becoming one in the way it operates. Yes, China could withhold all of our clothing but they would hurt themselves as much or more than they would hurt us. That's why globalization works, interdependece. Together, we are stronger.

I think we agree on the point of global warming. New sources of energy need to be discovered rather than using restrictions such as Kyoto.

I agree that there comes a point when someone becomes a distraction, but even then you know that person has no courtesy and they aren't someone you'd want to associate with on anything more than a physical basis. If a girl wants to dress like that, it's nice to know she's a slut. It helps you know which girls aren't sluts as well so you can get to know the people you want to know.

Well, I have to get back to work... or playing the Doom RPG on my phone in the bathroom.

Peace
