Niki’s wedding was really fun. Everything took place on Saturday, but I drove up a day early so I could be there on time. Troy PA is very very rural. Her house is located about 25 miles away from Elmira NY... aka in the boonies. There's only one stop light on the main street, and there are 2 bars and a few gas stations… The rest is filled with lush farmland. It kind of reminded me of Lock Haven, but a little bit more spread out. I typically drive around larger cities and roads, so my eyes began to get fuzzy in the darkness. It was cool though to be in a different kind of environment and I’ve always wondered what it would be like to grow up somewhere like that.
I arrived around noonish Friday and I chilled with Emily and Carrie. Hillary, Niki and her family had the rehearsal dinner at 4, while the rest of us just watched the boob tube at her farmhouse. Bethany, Jess and her younger sister showed up a little later, and then the whole group decorated the church and reception hall. It looked really awesome. I met Liz, one of Niki’s best friends and I got to talk to Juan a little bit before he went to bed. (Still recovering from his bachelor party)
Saturday I woke up at 9am, got a shower and got dressed. That’s all I had to do until the wedding began at 12pm. The ladies were up at like 6 or 7, getting their hair done, makeup, nails…. Etc. Needless to say I’m glad I’m not a girl! Lol.
The ceremony was very nice and very traditional. They did the usual mom and pop dances, dollar dances and the basic dinner routine. For the first time ever I caught the garter belt! Woo hoo! This meant that I was given the priveledge of putting it on the hottie who snatched the bouquet from the bride. It was hillarious because Juan and Niki were both given plastic bats, and they could bonk us if they thought it wasn't placed high enough. (The higher the belt, the longer the marriage is supposed to last.) Well I did my darndest, and honestly I couldn't go any farther without getting arrested or slapped. Hahahaha.
At the end of the night the momento was given to me... and now it's conveniently hanging on my rear view mirror! LOL!
There was a little bit of dancing, but I was one of the only guys out there busting a move. I guess none of the elders were drunk enough to shake their booties. Afterwards there was a keg party at the Olsyn household and the Thompson newlyweds headed off to their honeymoon. Us college folk taught the old people how to play beer pong and then we hit up one of the small town bars. It was a good time!
On Sunday everyone parted ways and I attempted to drive home. Mapquest gave me the strangest directions and I got a little lost on the way back. Fortunately I only added about 30 minutes to my trip... and not 3 hrs.
I just wanted to thank Niki, Juan and their entire family for letting me be a part of the celebration.
