Weekly Log #12 (2005)
Giant Foods is really starting to help with the food drive. They can only give me 1, 20-dollar gift card (at the most)… but given the fact that it’s “per store”, I hit up every single Giant in the county. I’m up to 60 bucks so far (in certificates), but I’m still waiting to hear from a few more.
I attempted to setup a season finale Rage trip with Country Meadows, but the timetable is too rough on the residents. They probably wouldn’t get back until 10:30 or 11pm, and it would severely affect their morning breakfast routine. Oh well. I know my Grandpa’s coming out to support me anyway.
The Sinking Spring playground didn’t really collect too many cans as of yet, but they claim that they’ll turn it up a notch. The leaders really have to push the contest a bit, mainly because children get obsessed with winning…. and it only takes a few eager youngsters to spark a wild fire.
We’re in the process of writing thank you letters to sponsors. At the conclusion of the season, I’m departing on a strong marketing campaign before I head out to the Steelers. Since I’ll be able to focus on selling, and not a gajillion other duties- I’m confident that I can raise at least a few thousand dollars on my own.

The last halftime contest of the year will be a fun game of limbo! Everyone likes to limbo! Hahaha! I’ll make an announcement asking for some interested volunteers…. and I’m hoping that I’ll get at least 20 kids.
I’ll do my usual introduction routine and then the contest will begin. The rules are simple… Toro (helper) and I will hold the stick at a certain level, and after everyone passes under it, we’ll lower it until there’s a winner!
I selected 4 songs to be used during the contest:
1. Limbo Rock~ Chubby Checker
2. YMCA~ Village People
3. Don’t Worry, Be Happy~ Bobby McFerrin
4. Boombastic~ Shaggy
1st place winner receives:
- Large pizza from Dominos
- Sittler Golf Pack
- 3 free kids sundays (Friendly’s)
- 2, 5.00 coupons for Applebees
2nd place winner receives:
- Large pizza from Dominos
- Sittler Golf Pack
Everyone else receives:
- Free kids sunday (Friendly’s)

I finally took some pictures at one of the Rage camps. Man, it’s been so hot lately and I can’t imagine running around in 100-degree weather for 5 hrs straight. Yeesh. All of our players take turns teaching material throughout the week. Campers learn all about playing skills, training techniques and even scoring celebrations! It’s really fun to watch the little races, because it reminds me of gym class.

Weiss Markets gave us 300 hot dogs and Pepsi is giving us 10 more cases of soda. The food vendors at Exeter are members of the High School PTA, so we’re allowing them to sell our free stuff for a little “under the table” fundraiser. Good internal PR on our part. It’s fan appreciation night, and we want to make everyone happy! Having cheap food at a sports event is a really good way to do it. We’re charging only 1 dollar for a hotdog/Pepsi combo.
We’re also raffling off an autographed Jersey, an autographed schedule, an autographed program, an autographed mini ball and several other cool items. I’m randomly giving out free Friendly’s sundays, t-shirts, hats and miniature golf passes. It’s going to be nuts!
I have to find a “Toro” for the weekend. Bryan (the guy who normally dresses) will not be in the area. Believe it or not I’m having a hard time finding someone to volunteer. I’m going to pay 50 bucks to the person… and it’s only 2 hours work, heck… I wouldn’t even call it work. I’d do it, but I’m already running around a thousand miles a minute.
Next season the Rage will be wearing mainly red and black. The white jerseys will be given to the players for a gift and the white shorts are going to be used as a combination color. In other words we can be red/white, red/red, black/red, black/black, or black/white. It will allow more freedom and it’s nice to have another set of shorts in the closet in case of an emergency.
This week I’m having a team picture produced for the players. I’m kind of disappointed with the photo quality and I should of used my own camera to begin with (Derek insisted to use his). If it were my decision, I would actually have another one taken before the Westchester match. I brought it up to Jerry on Monday, but he still wants to use the crappy version. He’s afraid that no one will get the new one if we retake it. I can see his point maybe, but there’s a thing called mail… and I hear it works.
My boss has developed an extreme lazy streak and it’s really starting to bother me. I know I’m supposed to do my job really well… and I do (just browse through the 11 previous journal’s), but I have 50 thousand things to accomplish within a strict time constraint. There’s no I in TEAM, but right now there is ME. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen Jerry at his computer playing fantasy football while I’m busting my butt 60+ hrs a week… I try to take it like a grain of salt, but at times it’s really aggravating. Maybe he’s testing my abilities, I don’t know!
When I came to the Reading Rage I made their heads spin. My work ethic and professionalism impressed the heck out of everyone… and it still does today. Instead of expanding the organization… I honestly feel like I am just being used for someone’s vacation time. I know that you have to jump through the hoops… but with this team, I’m already at the highest level I can be, other than part ownership. It’s frustrating, but in a way it’s a great experience. When the time comes, I’ll be ready for anything that is thrown in my direction.

More food drive stuff:
At the game, I’ve decided to have a few of my friends walk around with a donation bottle. The cash flow is starting to pick up quite a bit at Berkshire Orthopedics and I want to make at least 75 more dollars.
If someone brings 2 non- perishable items, they will only have to pay $2.00 at the gate. No mini balls or Frisbees will be distributed.
After all the banners are down, the coolers are emptied, the field markers are brought in, the trash is picked up, the Jerseys are separated, the locker rooms are emptied and cleared…. I have to take all the non-perishable items collected to the Rage office. I’m planning to add an extra week to my campaign, just so I can raise more money and hit up some of my contacts. I’m shooting for 200 dollars and 25 bags of groceries. That’s not too shabby for a soccer team!
-------------------
When the final whistle is blown…. All the parents, players, friends, workers and family members are having a little Subway/Dominos party at the merchandise stand…. It goes to figure that I’ll be cleaning up the field while all the excitement is going on. Great going away present huh?
