JOZI - MY CITY, MY HOME # 7

Jun 07, 2009 20:51

Last week I uploaded some photographs taken at the Johannesburg gasworks that paints a sad picture of neglect and ruin. All is not lost - in the Newtown area of the city a lot of urban regeneration is taking place.

The entrance to Museum Afrika. This building used to be the old produce market. It now houses the museum, the Market Theatre and various restaurants

The Nelson Mandela Bridge linking Newtown with Braamfontein

An attractive low cost housing development in Newtown with the refurbished Turbine Hall in the background. This used to be a very dangerous slum area.  The old Johannesburg Stock Exchange at 11 Diagonal Street, designed by the renowned American architect Helmut Jahn, is to the left below the huge Johnny Walker billboard. It is amazing that this striking building was completed in 1983, not even 30 years ago, and that the Stock Exchange has since moved to Sandton.

The beautiful symmetry of the old Johannesburg station dating back to Victorian times. The roof is intact and the large open space is used for events such as marketing launches and to shoot music videos.

I love urban art. This is so much more than graffiti. These works appear on the pillars beneath the double - decker N1 highway that runs through the centre of Johannesburg.
