Programming poll

Ok, so I'm trying to get our team moved off a "home grown" version control system that really sucks balls to something a little less buggy (ie. doesn't core dump if you have an apostrophe in a commit message) and a little faster (takes less than 5 minutes to check in a dozen files). And no, I'm not exaggerating. It really is that bad.

I've been reading up on DVCSes, and they're quite compelling. That said, I've also used CVS and SVN, and am mostly happy with SVN for my personal projects. (Of course, there's not much concurrent development happening there.)

So, for you developers on my friends list: What version control software do you recommend, and why? GIT has a lot of buzz thanks to the Linux kernel. It's far from the only game in town, though. Joel Spolsky's thrown in with Mercurial, in contrast. Can you help me pick a VCS / DVCS?

Poll Git vs. Mercurial vs.....

Edit: 'Cause of how LJ works, I can't fix the typo in the poll, so just mentally apply this regex--s/active discourage/actively discourage/--when you read it.

programming, things that suck, things that do not suck
