Why I never reboot. (Aka. "How come you never upload pics from your cameraphone anymore?")

I'm a Linux geek, and I love uptime. I've had machines go a year and a half without a reboot. It's partially a matter of pride.

With my current computer, it's also partly a matter of necessity. I reboot my computer so rarely, that I think it forgets how to boot. Rebooting is never, ever clean, and it usually involves at least a full powerdown ( Read more... )

I almost fainted when I read no boots for over 1 year...:)
Seriously, I can't even imagine that, though of course I use only PC's with Vista, XP, etc...and yeah, they do like to boot.

When I moved out of my apartment into my house, my webserver had an uptime of over 450 days. (Currently it's at 123 due to a power outage.) Plucky little Duron box. My machine at work isn't to the 1 year mark yet, but it will be in a few months:
$ uptime
20:21:13 up 225 days, 2:45, 20 users, load average: 0.02, 0.10, 0.14My VPN box here at home is similar...
$ uptime
20:23:37 up 213 days, 1:40, 9 users, load average: 0.01, 0.02, 0.00I don't miss Windows. :-)

Ah yes, the bain of all uptime whores everywhere. Been there, done that :). Only 59 days here though.
