Ok, so I haven't written for a while. I suck. Get over it.
In that interim, very little has changed in my life, sadly. Still single, still sucks. Work is largely filled by evil weasels. Well, incompetent evil weasels. Still, there are plenty of people there I like, and they insist on paying me to turn up, so I do. But, i don't have to be there;for two weeks, so that part is all good.
I saw Chronicles of narina the other day, and
it was fairly reasonable. Their were a few annoying bits, and some special effects failure (there is a point;at which aslan holds down one of the evil wolves under his paw and then it runs off - and both the quiet samurai and I agreed that for a second or so it was clearly a small-dog sized thing which may have been the small stuntdog or some such, rather than a wolf. Also watch for the point in the film where Lucy finds the petrified Mr Tumnus. There is a small section of that shot where rather than looking like she is about to cry, she looks like she's about to have a fit of giggles.
There's also a point which just seemed...silly to include. The kids are playing cricket, Ed hits a ball and it goes through a window. On one pane of the window is a small stained-glass thingy of a pair of crosses (a very christian symbol). On the other is a star and crescent (a very islamic symbol). It hits directly above the star and cresent and smashes through that window. Now, how do you do that by accident (as a film maker; obviously as a achild playing cricket anything is possible)? Sigh. Look, it's a highly christian film - and whatever. So's the book. But guys, keep the religious symbology to that required by the film, could you?
the big fight scene was...well, it was ok, but didn't to me show any of the tactical finness of the seige of helms deep or gondor. It seemed to be largely 'charge' with shiney bits. Also, when the griffin etc are being used as bombers, the queens army is apparently totally devoid of fighter cover (IE airborne troops) despite them being shown in the PREVIOUS SCENE. (There is a group of harpies shown in the sacrifice scene.)
Tilda swinton is, as not doubt has been told to anyone reading this a hundred times, really good as Jadis. She captures the inhuman evil of the character really well, as well as the psychotic threats and cajoaling of Edmund and various points.
It's no LoTR, but it is reasonable
I got several DVD's and cds and books for christmas, and then today went out and got lots more, including Die Hard, se7en, HHG2G, Batman begins (which has no commentary - you bastards!). Also purchased nevermind (I'd claim to have not had all the songs anyway, but that would be a filth damn lie), and, oh, stuff. And Calcium made interesting (the book of essays and letters of Graham Chapman(from python)).
Anyway, I'll try to leave it a smaller number of months next time.
