I'm through defending, or even being indifferent, to AOL. Last night, I discovered that they are now putting banner ads on each email window. Yes, they've been on a couple of the major windows and, of course, every one of their custom content windows, but they've avoided putting them on the individual email windows.
Now I get to read my email and see the same three banner ads for two mortgage companies, eBay and occasionally an overwhelmingly huge animated banner for some upcoming movie I have no intention of ever seeing. I'm told these are "are provided because they will be of interest to me" but the AOLtechs in Bangalore. Feh. The service is now no better than any free service. (And worse than GMail, of course, since their ads are text-based.) They raised rates by $2/month last month, too. That's what I get for being a loyal customer for over a dozen years.
You may all mock me now.
