right,
M$ has the power to create the Xbox without a write option,
and can fund the Winbook IIRC...
why not fund/influence the design of a SATA/IDE cable interrupter chip (think, thumb drive style) with a pre-loaded OS.
the OS would create a single file on the HD that tracks new installs, games, configurations, etc...
the end-user customization,
but the core of the OS would be stored on the chip.
a 4 gig chip would have space for updates (which would happen over the provider's "Automatic Updates" program with a PW to access the OS Drive) and would be solid-state and thus fairly shock proof...
thus whatever horrors the user visited on the HD wouldn't endanger the OS, and a new HD could be swapped in without having to do a clean install...
but then... big brother would be one step closer...
