Physical Nihilism

The saying is "Power, Speed, Endurance, Suffering and Salvation"At Gym Jones we train elite athletes and professionals. For some of these individuals fitness can mean the difference between life and death. The objective is genuine fitness, not the appearance of fitness. The methods we use are based on old ideas, new research, creativity, anecdotal evidence and our own high-stakes practice. Our programming emphasizes relative strength, power-endurance, and endurance because in these areas we are expert.

Gym Jones is not a cozy place. There’s no AC, no comfortable spot to sit and there are no mirrors. Stressors are intentionally designed to cause discomfort and apprehension. Effort and pain may not be avoided. Physical and psychological breakdowns occur. The support of a like-minded group, dedicated to The Art of Suffering, provides a safety net. An individual will push harder and risk more in the company of trustworthy peers and that’s one reason the gym is not open to the public. Gym Jones is a private, invitation-only facility located in Utah.

Genuine fitness. Breakdowns. The Art of Suffering.

What does it mean to be a physical being? As thinking creatures, our bodies are the means for our ideas - our will. The body will not endure. The body will die. There is no meaning in a body without purpose, as the body is a means to an end. An unchallenged body, like a mind, cannot know itself, and is thus prone to dishonest acts. The question is: how, in a world of mental, physical and spiritual sedation, can one truly be challenged? This requires careful thought and reflection.
The outcome of both sports competition and actual combat are decided largely by one's mental attitude. To be sure, superior firepower, whether physical or technical is a determining factor but the "heart" governs the application of resources, which makes spirit the most powerful force on the field. Acquiring the spirit necessary to win, which includes a positive acceptance of pain is difficult in a society where comfort is more highly regarded than capacity, where genuine physical fitness is the norm for less than 15% of the population. A visit to any normal gym that is open to the public offers an idea of what modern society thinks it means to be fit; magazines are read while "running" or "biking," weights are lifted by isolated muscles, often in a seated position, intensity is distinctly lacking, and "aerobics" classes are nothing more than jumping jacks set to music. Modern fitness is defined by appearance rather than actual horsepower. A training environment contaminated by this attitude cannot produce superior fitness, physical or mental.

Gym Jones is private and isolated from the modern fitness ideal precisely because we believe that attitude to be poison. We believe that a proper training facility is separated from the complacency of the general public, and has its own set of rules and values. We believe that nothing of value maybe acquired by simply going through the motions; real fitness is earned. The members of Gym Jones are family and our traditions and accomplishments are our history. In such an environment a proper attitude toward competition and individual sport performance is almost automatically achieved. We train with the same commitment we take into competition -- if you are not willing to give it everything you have, to go until there is nothing left to give then you should not bother competing. The only outcome of value is that which is realized by utterly committing all of one's resources to the task at hand.

Such an attitude is unwelcome in the normal fitness community and it's why Gym Jones is private.
Knowledge. “What you know does not matter - what you do matters.”

To think: enlightenment on a website about a gym. How delightful!
