More Conversations With An (Almost) 3-Year-Old

Mar 02, 2008 07:41

J.R. is sitting in Mother's lap, patting her tummy as the baby, who has so far eschewed more traditional forms of delivery, attempts to kick its way out.

J.R.: What happen to your tummy?
Mother: There's a baby in there.
J.R.: I wanna SEE the baby.
Mother: I do too.  It will come out soon, but Mommy doesn't know exactly what day.
J.R.: It come soon?
Mother: Yes.  When it decides to come out, you'll go over to stay with Nonna, and Daddy will take me to the midwives.  The midwife will help Mommy take the baby out.  Then Daddy and Mommy will come get you, and you, baby, Daddy and Mommy will all go home together.  Does that sound fun?
J.R.: Uh-huh.
Mother: Then you'll be a big sister.
J.R.: I NOT a big sister, I the baby.
Mother: But you will be a big sister when the little baby comes.
J.R.:
I love the baby.
