Two weeks ago, I bought graduation cards for two of the students I taught up north who will be graduating. They have sat collecting dust, and now I need to think of something to write in them before it is too late. I don't know why I have a stack of things to do and no interest in completing any of it. I've had my passport application sitting there for months. It is a simple form; fill out your name and a couple of people who can verify who you are and it's done. Yet, I have picked up the form and a pen and then pushed them aside probably half a dozen times in the last month or so.
Any roads, I thought the best way to fill a graduation card would be with a quotation. I did a quick search for grad-appropriate quotes. Sadly, most of them refer to college or university and entry into the business world. These kids aren't heading out into the big scary world. They aren't out to make a buck. They don't need to stand out from a crowd. It's difficult to find a quote that deals with their unique situation.
I'm also very biased right now. To read page after page of famous people telling me to chase my dreams and reach for the stars is far from enjoyable. I would say that I have done a pretty decent job of chasing every cliche in the book over the last few years, and none of that shit ist true! Belief in yourself is not enough. Setting your sites high and following your heart does not work.
I do not know the secret to success. What I do know is that there is a hell of a lot more to finding success than simply believing in yourself and doing your best and chasing dreams. That leads you NOWHERE!
