I think I’ve discovered a new occupation that would truly suit me - a TV show hitman. As not to be confused with playing a hitman on TV, a TV show hitman would actually bring about the untimely demise of TV shows. Sounds strange? Are you asking yourself why I’d ever consider myself a candidate for such a career let alone devote an entry to such an idea? Don’t I have anything better to do with my time? I haven’t updated with an lj entry in quite some time, have I completely lost my mind since the last entry? Almost. Well the deal is, I don’t want to “kill” TV shows but the sad truth is that I already have. I’ve had quite the killing streak already and while I wouldn’t mind killing every shit “reality” show and sitcom that I’ve ever been subjected to, I have little control over this gift since every show I’ve iced is one that I’ve actually liked, nay loved. It’s true; I’m such a seasoned killer now that I just killed a show in its infancy - “Wonderfalls”. FOX has cancelled Wonderfalls after it’s third week. They shot 13 episodes but they even decided that these remaining episodes would never see the light of day. I’ve gotten that good at offing shows. While I wouldn’t say that I “loved” Wonderfalls, I certainly liked it enough to tune in every week which means that if I give a show a chance, I’m investing my time in a show that I may be falling for.
I used to be a TV junkie for most of my life, watched a lot of shows that I hated simply because they were on but now I simply watch shows that I really like. Want to hear the shows that I ritually watch? It won’t take long. Angel (cancelled), Wonderfalls (cancelled) and X-Men: Evolution (cancelled). These are the only three shows that I must watch every week. I caught most of Smallville’s second season and one story-arc of this season and I may continue to watch it even though it’s more of a guilty pleasure. The writing is really bad for the most part and the younger stars are too soap opera melodramatic for me. The action’s great and the show looks good and while Superman is usually very lame in my book, Smallville manages to inject some coolness into him. The only reason why Smallville, SpongeBob and Justice League are still on the air is because I don’t go out of my way to catch every episode of them. Still not convinced of my curse for killing my favorite shows? Here are “my shows” from the past few years: Freaks & Geeks, Undeclared, Futurama (watched it regularly when it debuted until it got impossible to find after shuffled around and MIA because of stupid sports) and Batman Beyond (Buffy was also a favorite but it had a good run when it ended last year). All of these shows have a common thread besides being my favorite shows; they’re all creative, original and well made!!!
Maybe it’s not me that’s killing good TV, maybe it’s the fact that TV has this stigma of being bad and making you dumber so perhaps good TV is soon rejected. Think about it, reality shows never get cancelled, in fact they manage to jam like 3 new “seasons” of the same stupid, fucking, reality show in a year! WHY?!!! Reality TV is like being back in high school and watching a bunch of phoney jackasses and drama queens go about their shallow lives. Who wants to watch that? Apparently everyone. So thank you TV land, I now officially have nothing to watch nor will I bother to watch any new shows because: a) why bother when it’ll be cancelled and b) a show has to be good for me to bother with it and no one will take chances on brave, intelligent ideas anymore.
