Petition!

Guys, this may not really interest many of you, but I would like to ask you to please sign the petition you will find

here.

It is a request to the Canadian government to intervene in the creation of printer cartridges that are specifically designed so as they are impossible to refill. Millions of ink cartridges end up in landfills constantly because people either don't know they can refill them, believe that refilling them will cause irreparable damage to their printer, or (more often these days) because the company has designed them to defeat third party refillers. Lexmark, in particular, have created new lines of cartridges that actually include a clause with their purchase that the buyer cannot refill them. To ensure this there is a little chip put into the cartridge that kills it once it is empty. They are very sneaky about actually informing people that this is what they're getting when they buy the cartridge. They technically also have refillable versions of these cartridges available, but actually getting your hands on them is next to impossible since no actual retail stores carry them.

In any case, I'm aware of the oft-uselessness of petitions, but even beyond my working at an ink-refilling place I do feel that it's a shitty thing for these companies to do, not only for their customers but for the environment in general. We ought to be recycling whatever we can recycle. Anyway, I'll end my cliched "SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT" speech, and ask that if you give a damn, please sign the petition. Thanks!
