The Girl from Ipanema - Stan Getz & Astrud Gilberto (cover by Elise)

The story behind this song: Astrud Gilberto was just the wife of singing star João Gilberto when she entered a NYC studio in March 1963. João and Jobim were making a record with tenor saxman Stan Getz. The idea of cutting a verse on “Ipanema” in English came up, and Astrud was the only one of the Brazilians who spoke more than phrasebook English.

Astrud’s child-like vocal, devoid of vibrato and singerly mannerisms, was the perfect foil for her husband’s soft bumblebee voice. Jobim tinkled piano. Getz blew a creamy smooth tenor. Four minutes of magic went to tape.

At the time, there were no English lyrics to the song, so Norman Gimbal was brought in to write the English lyrics before Astrud could sing them. So, while Moraes wrote the original lyrics in Portuguese, Gimbal's lyrics are probably the best known for the song.

Heloísa Pinheiro IS 'the Girl from Ipanema.' She is now 70 years old, but she would walk by the same locations every day, and was the inspiration for the song. Both Jobim and Moraes have said that she 'is' that girl, and because of that, she won a court case brought on her by the children of Jobim and Moraes. Astrud also lays claim to the title, although in a different court case, against Frito-Lay, she lost. Her claim is based on her singing the song and it being associated with her, but she was not the inspiration for the song.

and at 70 she was the one who ran the Torch to start the 2016 Rio Olympics while the crowd sang "The Girl From Ipanema"- very touching.

music, jazz, video, favorites, live, babes, cover, songs, female vocalists, awesome, brazil
