Goren's failure to draw me in .....completely anonymous July 21 2005, 06:27:07 UTC
Mr D'onofrio,
A man I much admire said 'The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as dead: his eyes are closed'.
At times, detective Goren's expected brilliance and unerring ability to solve crime in a one hour time slot appears to me at times, beautiful to watch, but cold in the 'mystery' department!. Ratings, time constraints and plot priority aside, I feel that Goren is missing a delicious opportunity to connect with what I assume is a predominantly female target population.
As a member of this population, I find myself wishing that Goren would reveal a little more of himself on a personal level, I want him to manipulate me the viewer, into having to know exactly what makes him react to things in the ways that he does (ie layers of mystery)- I want him to allow me to see him make a mistake, to invite me in to help pick up the pieces he has uncharacteristically discarded. Perhaps a particularly interesting crime he is investigating elicits a PTSD type of response, perhaps he just gets too close to a perpetrator- the options are endless really, and I am obviously no expert, however, in the spirit of constructive (or perhaps creative ) criticism, I want Goren to draw me in completely, to elicit more questions from me than answers, to make the mysterious malleable and renew my appreciation for the artistry of his creator,
This would definately draw me in Mr D'onofrio,
Kind Regards,
'Classic with a twist'. :-)
