some of you seemed surprised that I hate stupid people more than oboe. In a nutshell, the reason why is because the effects of stupidity are always negative, while some people actually like oboe music. I was reminded of a particularly nasty example tonight.
In 1942 there was a night club in Boston called the Cocoanut Grove. Because of the war, people were usually gloomy, so many turned to the night life to brighten things up. The Cocoanut Grove was a particularly popular place, with around 1,000 people packing inside at times. The problem? The building was only licensed to hold 500. The owner blew that off, taking advantage of his club's popularity to make him more money. After all, the rules didn't apply to him. Sure enough, a fire breaks out one night. People flood to the emergency exits. Everything would still be ok, but the owner, stingy as ever, had locked all of the emergency exits so nobody could slip out without paying. That left people to escape through the main entrance, which was a revolving door built for one person at a time. People packed into the revolving door, but some died on the way through, and the doorway filled with dead bodies. That left about 500 people to die by the fire or by the noxious gases flowing throughout.
The irony? About 1000 people were in there, minus the 500 who died, gives you about 500, which the building was licensed for. Go figure.
A fabulously extreme example, yes. but what matters is stupid people are much more to be hated than oboe.
