Tombstone, 3:10 to Yuma, etc.

Sunday was the anniversary of Wyatt Earp's death, according to one of my wild west groups. I recently watched the movie Tombstone again, mostly to study Val Kilmer's take on Doc Holliday (fascinating), and I've read a lot about Earp; still, I admit, I don't really have a good picture of the man or his motivations. Wyatt Earp is the perfect example of a fabricated real person, someone whose actual personality is lost in the hype. I have to admit I enjoyed Kurt Russell's version, while I didn't care at all for Kevin Costner's. Here's a character who-- like Jesse James--was probably portrayed by a half dozen actors (at least) in the past fifty years, and probably never all that well.

We screened 3:10 to Yuma over the weekend, and I was very impressed. I found it much more compelling than the original, with Crowe and Bale a really magical pairing. I loved so many of the touches in the movie, and I was pleased to see the Pinkerton company appear in a pivotal role. (The special coach with the gattling gun actually has the 'eye' logo painted on the side!) It was amusing that one of the 'additional scenes' has Ben Wade mentioning Allan Pinkerton's recent death to the agent played by Peter Fonda, which, by the way, places the story in 1884. (And, yes, he knows Pinkerton died from an infection caused by biting his own tongue!)

And at least I now understand why the 3:10 slash community I joined is called "Bridal Suite"! It's much the same as my use of the term 'line shack' for a western slash community.

And here's a completely unexpected development: I was approved for the 'Playin With the Boys' community I applied for some time ago. I'd given up on that.
