Last Friday I attended Rilo Kiley's record-release concert for their excellent new album "More Adventurous"-
The John Anson Ford Theatre in Los Angeles was a perfect venue- an intimate open-air ampitheaterette with vintage Eucalypti, sedate palms, and 1920s architecture-
My friend Harrison and I got there very early and were able to secure front row seats, which proved to be a really good thing, as sitting in the front row ensures a really good view of the stage- we were about five feet away from Blake, the guitarist- awesome.
The atmosphere was festive- the band hired two balloon specialists to contort balloons into the rough approximations of various animals- the octopus was the best.
There was a sno-cone machine, and vegan doughnuts, and a foul-mouthed comedian opened the show- I, sitting in front, proved to be the first butt of his finely-honed wit:
Comedian: So, you, are you in a band?
Me: Nope.
Comedian: Then get a ****'n haircut!
The opening acts were Ben from Death Cab for Cutie and The Postal Service. Wow!!!
Rilo Kiley's performance was incredible- one of the best shows I've ever seen, and I've seen a few-
Jenny's singing was affecting, emotionally precise, and perfect, while Blake's guitar playing was virtuosic- the string section (cello and violin) and Max on the trumpet were also fine touches-
