Chapter 11

Another couple of days passed before Sam was steady enough to walk around on his own. The bruises above his ribs were very slowly fading from a dark to a lighter purple and he would still be feeling stiff and achy for a while but he was healing and Dean was slowly relaxing.

“You know that the longer we wait the madder he’ll get at us, right? He dropped me off at the hospital and wanted to come and break me out in a day or two so he’s probably already searching for me,” Sam explained between bites.

Dean was sitting across from him at the kitchen table and waiting for him to finish his breakfast. “But you’re still recovering, Sam…”

“Yeah, and it’ll need another couple of weeks before I’m completely fine but we can’t wait that long. I want to get this off the table and tell dad… It doesn’t matter how he reacts, I just want to get it over with and be able to move on. I’ve already asked Jared if they could drive us to the motel where dad and I were staying before the hunt.”

“I’m pretty sure that it’ll turn ugly really quickly so… maybe you should stay here and let me talk to dad on my own…” Dean tried to suggest but immediately noticed his mistake when Sam’s eyes narrowed and he opened his mouth to start arguing. “Okay, okay, forget I said that. We’ll go together but I want to leave Sean here when we confront dad.”

This time the younger Winchester had to admit that his brother had a point. “Yeah, I think it really is better if we leave him out of it.”

Dean smiled gratefully, glad that they wouldn’t have to argue that point. “So did Jared say yes?”

“He and Jensen have the day off and he said that when they get back from grocery shopping one of them could drive us,” Sam answered

“Okay… I’ll clean up the kitchen and check on Sean and you get dressed, so we’re ready when they come home. I really don’t want to let them wait and I want to be back before it gets dark,” Dean replied thoughtfully. He knew that they wouldn’t get things straightened out with their dad so easily and he didn’t want to be away from Sean the whole day so they might as well suck it up and get things over with just like Sam had said.

Sam agreed wordlessly and got up from his chair, leaning in for a quick kiss before shuffling into their bedroom to get changed.

*

A little over an hour later Jensen pulled up the car in front of the rundown motel that Sam had mentioned and frowned. “Are you sure you want to do this?” he asked twisting around to look at Sam and Dean who were sitting in the backseat of the car, Dean’s arm protectively slung around the younger teen’s shoulders.

“We’ll have to confront him sooner or later and the longer we wait the worse it’ll be.” Dean sounded gloomy but the look in his eyes was defiant, showing he was willing to fight for his and Sam’s freedom.

Jensen really had a bad feeling about the boys’ plan to find Sam’s dad and tell him the truth about them. He had discussed the matter with Jared that morning before they had left the house and talked about it some more on the drive back home, listening to Jared’s soothing assurances that they would make sure that the boys would be okay, no matter what.

The only thing they knew about Sam’s dad was what Dean had told them about the man and that had only given Jensen a very disturbing mental image of a bitter man wanting vengeance for his wife’s murder at all costs. The fact that John, as Dean had called him, didn’t have any second thoughts about dropping his severely injured teenage son in front of an ER and driving off just to avoid paying the hospital bill, didn’t improve that impression at all.

They were parked less than twenty feet from the room John had rented. The lights were on and through the flimsy motel room curtains Jensen could see a broad-shouldered silhouette moving around inside.

“Dad…” Sam hissed as he caught sight of the shadow inside the room and Dean pulled him closer so he could whisper in his ear.

“Are you sure you want to do this now, Sammy?” the older teen asked clearly concerned.

Sam nodded jerkily. “Yeah, I want him to know about us and about Sean,” he answered with determination, making it clear that his mind was set and he would have that talk with or without Dean.

“Okay, then let’s do this,” Dean agreed with equal resolve, cupping Sam’s cheek and pressing their lips together to reassure him. Then he pushed the car door open to get out but Jensen’s voice made him stop mid-movement.

“I don’t think you should go in there alone. I’m coming with you.”

“No!” Dean shot back immediately. He had let Sam in on what he had told Jensen and Jared but his carefully spun mesh of lies of them being childhood friends and John taking him in after his parents had died would collapse like a house of cards if Jensen came with them now. “John’s very suspicious of strangers. If you come with us that’ll only make him mad,” he quickly lied, praying that Jensen would just let it go and not insist on coming.

The frown on the older man’s face darkened. “If you really think it’ll be better if I stay out of this, then I will,” he said solemnly, looking straight into Dean’s eyes. “I’ll be right here keeping an eye on the room, though, and if there’s any sign of John getting violent I’m coming in.”

That was probably the best deal they would get, so Dean agreed with a nod. “We’ll be alright but it might take a while before we come back.”

“That’s okay. You’ve got all the time you need. Jared’s taking care of Sean and I brought something to read.” Jensen held up the newspaper that was lying on the passenger seat, trying to lighten the mood a little. “Just take care of both of you, kiddo.”

“Yeah,” Dean replied in a raspy voice and stepped out of the backseat, holding out a hand to Sam who quickly followed him across the small parking lot. “You ready, Sammy?” he asked once more making sure before finally knocking on the door.

Shuffling sounds could be heard inside the room as their dad probably hid his weapons in his duffle bag before answering the door. The few seconds before the door was opened felt like forever and both boys instinctively clasped their hands together bracing themselves for what came next.

Finally the door was pushed back, revealing their disheveled and tired looking dad. His glassy gaze was a clear giveaway that he had probably been drinking, which wasn’t all that surprising if he had really been looking for Sam. He seemed to sober up a little when he saw his sons standing in front of him, wide eyes looking left and right before he quickly ushered them in with a gruff gesture and slammed the door shut behind their backs.

Dean suddenly felt trapped in the small room but before he could assess their situation any further their dad’s open hand connected with his face sending a stinging pain through his cheek. He heard Sam say his name in shock but didn’t get the chance to assure him he was alright because their dad was right in his face already.

“Where the fuck have you been?” he demanded furiously.

Dean could feel a chill running down his spine at the heated question but at least their dad was directing his anger at him and not at Sammy. “I’m sorry, Sir…” he answered straight away, keeping eye contact with their dad because he knew it would only irritate him further if he didn’t.

“You’ve been gone for months without so much as a fucking word and you’re sorry? I don’t care if you’re sorry, I wanna know where the fuck you’ve been, you little shit!” John said, his voice level but threatening as he grabbed a fistful of Dean’s jacket to pull him closer.

“Don’t touch him!” Sam suddenly intervened, taking a step towards their drunken father and looking up at him with blazing hazel eyes.

“Don’t talk to me like that, Sam!”

It wasn’t only a warning it was an order but Sam had never been the good little soldier that their dad had wanted him to be. “He ran away from you! He left because he was too afraid to tell you he was…”

“Sam, stop!” Dean tried cut his brother off, grabbing onto his wrist to catch his attention before he could blurt it all out just like that but he reacted too late.

“…pregnant!” Sam’s accusing voice seemed to echo inside the scarcely furnished room.

John’s eyes widened in shock for a split-second before narrowing again. “So you’re not only chasing every skirt you see but now you’re also letting random guys fuck you and you’re stupid enough to let one of those perverts knock you up?” he asked in a scornful sneer, every word dripping with disdain and disgust.

Dean felt like his head was spinning with everything that had been said. The situation was clearly spinning out of control as well and he was still trying to wrap his mind around it when Sam once more opened his mouth.

“He didn’t let random guys fuck him!” the younger Winchester shouted angrily, trying to defend his brother’s honor but only making matters worse. “He’s with me and he had my baby!”

That revelation rendered John Winchester speechless for a moment but he recovered all too quickly, focusing back on Dean. “So that’s what you understand as taking care of Sammy, you sick fuck?!”

Enough was enough and the situation was already beyond fucked-up so Dean decided to throw in his own two cents. “I love him!” He shot a quick glance sideways at Sam, who looked a bit shocked, probably because he wasn’t used to see Dean standing up to their dad like that. Dean was usually the good son, who followed orders and didn’t talk back.

“Oh, that changes everything. If you love him then go ahead and keep spreading your legs for him, Sport!” John shouted at Dean mockingly, visibly fuming and about the lose his last shred of restraint and lash out.

*

Jensen had opened the window on the driver’s side to listen in on what was happening inside the motel room after John had ushered the boys inside. His gut instinct that something bad was going on had been proven right but he had tried to stay put and not barge into the room because he had promised Dean he would try to stay out of it. Listening to all the hurtful words coming out of John’s mouth had made matters even harder because he knew how much they had to be affecting Dean.

“…then go ahead and keep spreading your legs for him, Sport!” Jensen heard through the open window and gasped as he put two and two together, remembering how upset Dean had been that one time he had used that nickname for him. Back then Dean had told him that his dad had used to call him ‘sport’ when he was little and Dean’s parents were supposedly dead, so that explanation had made perfect sense to Jensen.

“Just let Sammy put another incest baby in you…” John’s booming voice carried through the open motel room window and erased all remaining doubts for Jensen that he might have understood something wrong.

Sensing how out of control the situation was, Jensen jumped out of the car and ran towards the room, throwing his shoulder against the door and hearing the lock break as it swung open.

“He’s your kid brother, Dean!” John was shouting in accusation as Jensen stumbled into the room, looking around quickly just to see the older man taking a swing at Dean.

Still acting on autopilot, Jensen launched himself at the bulkier man and managed to throw him off balance so that John stumbled back a few steps and crashed into the wooden dresser hard.

He had never picked a fight with anyone but when Jensen had seen Dean and Sam in imminent danger he couldn’t stop himself. “Get back to the car!” he shouted out to the boys, locking eyes with their father. “You’re drunk. Sleep it off and when you’re sober and ready to sit down and have a civilized talk with your boys then call us.” He pulled a business card from his jacket pocket and threw it in John’s general direction before turning to leave. “If you show up to do anything stupid, I’ll call the cops on you,” he added as an afterthought and left the room to walk back to his car.

Both boys were standing next to the SUV, looking shaken. Jensen noticed their clasped hands, which clearly indicated how badly the recent events had affected them.

“Let’s go home,” Jensen said in a soft voice, opening the back door for the boys and waiting for them to climb inside before slipping behind the wheel and driving back to Jared in suffocating silence.

*

The twenty minute drive back to the house felt like it took forever. Jensen kept sneaking glances through the review-mirror and each time that Dean caught his eyes in the mirror he lowered his own and pulled Sam a little closer against his side.

After pulling up to their driveway and parking the SUV Jensen wasn’t too surprised that the boys stood frozen in place and showed no signs of leaving the car.

“Come on… Jared’s probably already out of his mind with worry.” Jensen got out of the car and opened the door to the backseat, waiting for the boys to follow his lead.

Dean kept avoiding Jensen gaze as they silently trudged up to the front door while Sam at least looked at him once with a mix of dread and nervous curiosity.

Before Jensen could even pull the keys out the front door was opened from the inside of the house, revealing Jared who was rocking a screaming Sean in his arms and looking frazzled.

“He was fine but half and hour ago he started crying and just won’t stop. His diaper’s dry and he refused the bottle I made for him. I really don’t know what…”  Jared started explaining but Dean didn’t bother listening and immediately took Sean out of his arms.

Not looking at either of the two men who had been nothing but kind and supporting to him in the past couple of weeks the teen went straight to his bedroom

Sam shot a quick and uncertain glance at Jared and Jensen, who wordlessly nodded his understanding, before following his brother down the hall.

“Dean, what’s going on?” Sam asked, feeling edgy just by watching his brother, who had grabbed a bag from the closed and was one-handedly throwing random items of clothing into it while trying to rock Seam with his other arm.

“They know,” Dean shot back as if that explained everything but the added, “We need to get out of here before they have time to think about it properly and call the cops on our asses!”

“Why should they call the cops?” the younger teen wanted to know clearly not following his brother’s chain of thoughts.

Dean stopped for a moment to at his brother like he had just asked the most stupid question in the history of mankind. “Ever heard of the term ‘incest’, geekboy? And what does it matter if they call the cops or CPS? I’m not gonna sit here and wait to see who’s gonna come and take Sean away before separating us, too.”

“I don’t think that Jared and Jensen would do that to us. They’ve been nothing but kind and helpful to us…” Sam pointed out still confused.

“That was when they still thought I had run away because my boyfriend had knocked me up but now they know we’re brothers, Sam! They’ll be disgusted and… I’d swear that Jared wanted to ask me to let them adopt Sean when they took me in. This would be their chance to get him.” Dean’s voice was getting a little louder with every word as he grew more and more anxious. “Now just stop asking questions for once and help me pack!”

*

“What went wrong?” Jared demanded after watching Sam take off after Dean.

The fact that Jensen was wringing his hands, obviously trying to stay calm, was also a clear sign that something had gone terribly wrong and that was even more alarming. “Jensen, talk to me!”

“I… I need some coffee…” Jensen said, avoiding the question and trying to side step Jared to get to the kitchen but strong arms shot out and grabbed onto him.

Giving Jensen a gentle shake to get his attention, Jared searched for eye contact, hoping to get at least a hint about what was going on around him. He hadn’t liked the idea of waiting at home while Jensen drove the boys to the motel and their inevitable confrontation with Sam’s father but he had agreed to that arrangement because of Sean. “You’re shaking, Jensen! Coffee’s the last thing you need right now, so stop stalling and tell me what happened at the motel.”

“No, I… I need to think…” Jensen mumbled, staring through Jared as if he wasn’t even there.

“Jen, you’re scaring me. What happened? What did Sam’s father do to them?” Jared was getting more alarmed by the second and if Jensen didn’t give him an answer now, he would go after the boys and kick the door to the room open if he needed to but he had to get an explanation from someone.

Jensen suddenly shook his head. He was still staring off into the distance but apparently had heard Jared’s question. “No… Not Sam’s father… Their father…” he said cryptically and then his eyes focused on Jared’s puzzled face as if he had just understood the real meaning of his words. “They’re brothers, Jay…” he finally croaked in a broken whisper, barely keeping it together.

Jared’s eyes went wide with shock when he realized what Jensen had just told him and he pulled his lover into a tight embrace, whispering close to his ear. “We need to talk to them, Jen. They must be freaking out. We have to talk to them before Dean does anything stupid.” The last syllable was muffled by the creaking sound of a window being opened forcefully. Letting go of Jensen, Jared turned on his heels and ran down the hall towards their guestroom.
