I tend to translate too liberally at times, and too literally other times. As said earlier, pinch of salt is necessary.
2010.07.22 Hanako Kamiki Ryunosuke & Shida Mirai
Special interview for the movie "Karigurashi no Arrietty"
Shida Mirai X Kamiki Ryunosuke
Shida Mirai and Kamiki Ryunosuke whose talents strongly speak for themselves amongst all the young actors.*
The two 17 year olds with young and sparkling radiance are collaborating in Ghibli's new work as voice actors for the first time!
Shida-san who is challenging a seiyuu role for the first time and Kamiki-san who is working with Ghibli for the fifth time will talk to us about the charm of this work.
Received the encouragement "If it's you, you can surely do it!"
Arrietty, a tiny girl who lives underneath floorboards, met Sho, a boy who came to the house to nurse his health. These are the 2 characters that Shida Mirai-san and Kamiki Ryunosuke-san gave life to in Studio Ghibli's latest work. Unlike the experienced Kamiki-san, this is Shida-san's first time challenging voice acting.
S: I was very nervous. I didn't know when to speak, I didn't know anything. Very happy to be able to participate in Studio Ghibli's work, but now it's different from last time, from being the one receiving the dream to the one presenting the dream**, I was extremely worried about how much I could deliver this outstanding work to others. So, when I heard that Kamiki-kun will be in it too, I became more at ease. It feels like there's someone to rely on (laughs) (KamiShi moment lol)
K: Same for me. How would working together as voice actors be like? That is something I anticipated. But I was still nervous.
S: I couldn't tell at all. Whenever I start becoming nervous, you will encourage me by saying "It's ok", really makes the other party feel reassured.
K: I said things like "If it's you, you can surely do it!" right (laughs). This time however Sho's character setting is a sick and frail boy, the way he speaks is different from normal people, the speed of his speech have to be very slow, and since he's matured and steady he will not change suddenly from expressions of happiness, anger, sadness or joy. Creating a sound to match this minute changes in expression, it was difficult but fresh.
S: About this, it's the same for me too. Blending in Arrietty's facial expressions with my own voice, using 2 different persons to act as one person is very difficult. But her expressions and actions are very cute, the pictures were also extremely beautiful, the movement of every single leaf is very life-like, it is a very Ghibli piece of work.
In control of herself, a mentally strong person.
The story starts from the point where Sho spots Arrietty, who as a tiny person should strictly not be seen by human beings. An encounter between a tiny girl with a human boy belonging to different worlds.
S: Sho who had lost any will to live due to his family and illness, met with Arrietty. The two who grew up in different environments are attracted by the things that the other party has which they themselves don't have, growing up together and learning the meaning of "living". I think it is this type of movie.
K: That's right. What I felt was that, this work depicts nature very beautifully. Humans destroy nature for the sake of their survival. Like Sho who embraced nature, will be embraced by nature too right. I feel that the movie is trying to bring across this message to people too. In addition, I was surprised by how scary human beings are to the tiny people. It is the kind of feeling that sends shudders down the spine.
S: Yes. It is probably because of the vivid depiction.
K: Uh-huh. Because it is from a perspective I've never seen before, so I still haven't found the answer.***
--We heard that Sho is modeled after Kamiki-san?
K: I am very honoured. Even I can see the similarities too.
S: Other than the drawing, I think that kind-hearted part is very much like Kamiki-kun.
K: I'm embarrassed if you put it this way (laughs) I've always thought that Shida-san's expressions, especially in comedy, she has a abundance of expressions. This part is very much like Arrietty. The facial expression is weird (laughs) but the gaze is clear, she is in control of herself, a mentally strong person. When I heard from the side, I felt that the voice is very frank.
S: I am also embarrassed hearing this face to face...... it's not something great, saying such things conversely makes it a mental burden (laughs)
K: Other than that, Shida-san is always moving about, like a small animal. This is also like Arrietty right (laughs)
Captions underneath the movie pictures
Sho - Sho's expressions and posture are modeled after Kamiki-san
Arrietty - Shida-san's energetic voice makes Arrietty who is moving about in the green courtyard even more life-like.

*Not a literal translation by the way.
**Previously she watches the films which gave her hopes and dreams, and now she's the one who is voicing the character and giving hopes and dreams to others. I just can't seem to put it in concise terms T_T
***He probably means that he still haven't figured out why it was so scary from the tiny people's perspective.
For those who have been here before, you might have noticed that the layout has changed :D (And ah.. ignore the image on the right first. Haven't had time to properly figure out what I want to put there) Long story short, I wanted something simple with tags at the side. In a hurry to post this before I have to go off, sorry about any mistakes @_@
