Subway is planning to use Mr. Phelps in a high-profile marketing event this summer and is now monitoring the situation to see if the sandwich chain will have to scrap those efforts, according to a person familiar with the matter. A spokeswoman for Subway declined to comment...

Still, a spokeswoman for [Speedo] declined to comment on whether its contract with Mr. Phelps, which comes up for renewal at the end of the year, would be affected.

It looks like the biggest impact MP is going to feel is with future contracts, both from companies who already sponsor him and new companies who may pass on him because of this. I'd be willing to bet that this little indiscretion is going to seriously affect his bargaining power during the renegotiations for his Speedo contract.

I think that Speedo will renew with him, but I'm doubtful on Subway. Speedo still stuck with him after the DUI arrest, but I'm sure they'll be keeping a close eye on him for the rest of the year.

Oh, no doubt that Speedo will keep him, but I think that instead of getting a new contract worth maybe 3X as much as the old one, he'll be lucky to get one that's worth more than the one he already has.

yep, I think it will all depend upon how he conducts himself this next year. If he gets back to actually swimming, and does well at the Worlds, and conducts himself with as much maturity he can muster, this will become more of a sidenote than an actual problem.

But if he continues to participate in questionable behavior or continues to surround himself with the same entourage, it will matter when it comes to resigning these endorsements.

Leno made a crack about the red eyes (thought it was from the chlorine) and the 12,000 calories a day...but then he seemed to pick on the press a bit for acting stupid over whether it was a pot bong or not.

Not *bad*, but they still did. I cringed when the Letterman crowd booed him...yet the moment Dave put emphasis that Phelps smoked *weed* they turned a cheek *awfully* quickly...
