Phelps issues apology....

Feb 01, 2009 12:29

I'm going to post the AP report here, but I will still not permit the News of the World article due to the amount of hearsay included in the body of thge report. Seeeing how Phelps has just issued a statement adknowledging he was smoking marijuana @ USC on Nov 6th, this consists of legitimate news and I'd be doing a disservice to the community in ( Read more... )

A part of me is wondering right now whether we Phelps fans are really the only ones (outside the media, who'll eat up anything remotely controversial, and perhaps his sponsors) getting into a tizzy over this. Because I've read comments on swimming forums, on the Swimming World Magazine site, and even comments on an L.A. Times blog article and the consensus from them so far seems to be a big "So what"?

I'm honestly surprised by that. I believe this is a huge deal...we've all talked it out. IT'S ILLEGAL. I'm sorry if I'm over reacting, but that's a big deal.

It is, but it would be totally unfair if his career was ruined because of this.

Agreed. But it's also not something that should be shrugged off. That was just my anger coming out...

My concern is more of if this isn't a wake up call, and its brushed off as "so what", where does it stop? He needs to know that this could be a jump off point if he doesn't take this kind of activity seriously. It can lead to much more serious stuff if he just gets a little slap on the wrist for this.

IA. Despite my own feelings which constantly seem in flux right now, I still say nip this type of public behavior in the bud before it gets even more serious.

Oh, I think he's getting his wake up call...he took off from Tampa, didn't he? He's feelin' it. I believe that wholeheartedly. He has amends that he needs to make with his family and Bowman right now.

Get it out bb, get it out!! It's healthy!

Frankly, I've almost been reduced to tears while watching the blurbs on CNN and ESPN2...seeing on TV just took me away from being logical about it for a while. And knowing that there isn't anything that can be done for it just makes it suck more.

BTW, he added his statement to his FB page, and comments are being allowed again.

Oh thank God about the FB comment status. I needed a laugh.

But seriously, most of what I read so far is supportive, while some aren't. One is like, "Come to Jesus. Jesus is the way." And another is like, "Bad news, bro. Snoop Dogg is thinking about taking lessons." Wow.

I haven't tuned in to any other news or sports channels. I usually have ESPN and SportsCenter on, but I just haven't.

Watching the game got me out of this rut I've been in for the last 20 hours, so it was nice to be distracted for a few hours. Despite the Cardinals loss. :(

I also just got a comment on my only YouTube video...

Michael Phelps is smoking for the medals!!!!!

Moron. *DELETE*

I don't think it'll be ruined, but this isn't going to go away so cleanly like the DUI did. American fans are *so* fickle and can be incredibly close-minded. We've seen proof of that. I have no tolerance for people who can't maintain perspective.

Wanna hear a strange thing I heard once? Actually *smoking* it isn't the actual illegal part, if you want to get technical. But having a certain amount in your possession, depending on what state you're in. it can be either a misdemeanor or a felony with intent to sell. Plus, being under the influence while operating a vehicle. But the actual *smoking* of it isn't illegal.

How stupid is that? I don't know how true it is, but that's almost hilarious.

I heard the same thing. Mentioned it in Sassy's journal not long ago. I think it's true. Which is weird. But if that's the case, it's not as big a deal as we thought it would be, right? I mean, it's still stupid, no doubt, but if not illegal, then...

Now that I think about it, you always hear about people being arrested on "possession" of marijuana, not the actual smoking of it. Still kind of wtf, though.
