Vanessa Abrams did not need saving. She had never expected some boy from the Upper East Side to come and solve her problems for her. She was just not that girl.

And Nate, well he couldn’t save himself let alone anyone else.

He was a mess, but he always came to her and she would never refuse to help him. Like she told him in a black out many months before, he was better then this.

One day he would rise up to his potential, she’s sure of that, but until then she’ll be okay.

Vanessa Abrams would save herself; she’d been telling herself this repeatedly ever since the stick turned blue.

And now she was looking at the blue-eyed boy in front of her, his face a little red, sputtering words she knows he wants to mean and maybe does in some way, holding a diamond ring in front of her.

It’s the Vanderbilt ring, he told her about it, and from the little he shared this was not an object he thought of fondly.

And now he wanted to give it to her because she was pregnant?

“Stop!” She chimed, unable to contain herself anymore.

“And I know this will be hard, but we’re in this together. . .” He continued to ramble.

“Nate!”

He stopped talking mid sentence and fluttered his eyes back up to her defeated face.

“We can’t do this. You don’t want to do this.” She spoke slowly, calmly.

He responded immediately, “I wanna do right by you and-”

“This is not the 1950’s and I don’t need you to save me.” She responded just as fast. She grabbed the ring she had vaguely felt him push on her finger and placed it in his waiting palm. “If you wanna be there for me, then do it. But I’m not gonna marry you, we’re not ready.”
He stared at her for a moment, and then let out a sigh of relief as he nodded his beautiful head solemnly.

“Besides, you’re supposed to get married because you love someone.” She explained. “And that is not why you were doing this.”

“I do love you ya know?” He stared into her eyes, never breaking the gaze until she spoke again.

“I know.” She answered him with a warm smile gracing her lips.

Her smile was contagious and soon he was grinning. “I should get rid of this thing,” He held the ring out in the air. “It’s terrible for me.”

She entwined his open hand with her own. “Not yet, maybe someday it’ll work out better for you.”

Six years later, she looked down at a blue-eye man, her man, her future husband. She mumbled an enthused “Yes!” and felt him once again slip the Vanderbilt ring onto her finger.
